Congrats to Katherine Robinson and Christian Riegel for their 5:05:06 finish in Carlsbad, good for 39th place (W45) for Katherine and 80th place (M45) for Christian.
Congrats to Adriana Moryski and Donn Lay who finished the 52 mile trail race in the Sierra Estrella mountains. The 52 mile course climbs 3600 feet and is all trail, going through a variety of desert conditions. Adriana finished as the 7th Woman (!!) in 14:12:21 and Donn finished as the 15th Man in 14:12:20. Congrats
Congrats to Debbie Bellamy for her 3rd place in age group at the Sedona marathon with a 5:10:07. The race is on rugged trails, all between 4,000 and 5,000 feet of altitude and many, many hills. Awesome job, Debbie!
Congrats to Steve Whelan for his superb time at the half-marathon in New Orleans - 1:59:18 gave him 130th place in M45.
Congrats to Verne and Jenn Masur on their double-BQ at the Phoenix marathon. Verne ran 3:07:58 for 20th place in the Men's 40-44 and Jenn ran 3:44:32 for 31st in W40-44.
Congrats to these hardy finishers on a reportedly very icy course.
Kathryn Rachar placed 2nd in her age group on this timed trail race. Most timed races are flat and fast - typically on a track or easy loop. Not this one! The elevation was at 4600 feet, and the single track trail included a rocky climb up the mountainside for every 2 mile loop. Congrats Kathryn!
Only one week after doing the Look Gopher Attack marathon, Tania Diener and Jan Steenkamp finished one of the big ones! Tania ran the London marathon in 5:02:52, finishing 788th in the W50-54 age group, and Jan finished in 5:17:36, stopping for pizza and still finishing 1993rd in the Mens 50-54 age group.
Philippe Lacroix won his age group (M55) in a time of 3:27:43 at the Marathon des Erables. He reported great weather, and lots of maple syrup on snow at the finish!
Congrats to Patti Sandison Cattell and her crew of fabulous volunteers who put on a superb race. The full results are here: https://www.startlinetiming.com/en/races/2017/rps
Here are the results of MM club members - please email if we missed anyone!
Top congratulations to our four members who set a PR: Derek Anaquod, Lorraine Brezinski, Doug Best, and Connie Kozak! We also had a few age group placers: Derek, Lorraine, Robert Humphries, and Mary Simrose. Congrats!
Christian Riegel and Katherine Robinson both earned their mugs at this 24 hour trail race. The mugs go to runners who complete at least 72 miles and at least one mile every hour during the race. Chris reported the race as being very tough, with lots of climbing and descending. They both reached 82.2 miles, with Katherine winning the Womens 40-49 age group and Christian placing 4th in the Mens 40-49 age group. Congrats!
Shelley Zerr continued her 50 states project with a half marathon finish at the New River half-marathon near Boone NC. Shelley finished in 2:22:29, earning her 4th place for the W50 age group. The next weekend, she completed the Mill Stone Half Marathon Trail race in 3:08:38 for an age group placing of 3rd. Congrats on your 36th and 37th states Shelley!
Congratulations to all the Regina runners, led by President Wade Hagen, who ran the beautiful Vancouver course. Our top performer was Lana Thompson-van Eaton with a 5th place finish in the Women 55 age group.
Congrats to Jennifer Taylor who was the Women's winner of the Eston river trek marathon - Jennifer described the course as a long undulating straight line on a highway, then a long, undulating line on a gravel road and then another long line on a highway with bigger undulations. Great perseverance, Jenn!
This was the designated club trip this year, with almost 20 MM members running. Firstly, congrats have to go to our new ultra-runners: Brenda Stricker and Don Ditson. As they say, any idiot can run a marathon, but it takes a special kind of idiot to run an ultra-marathon. Shelley Cook, Ashley Desjardins, Dennis Dreher, Heidi Schmalz and Conor Renouf notched new furthest-distances PRs. And Conor Renouf, Heidi Schmalz, Derek Anaquod, Matt Ludlow, Ashley Desjardins and Rob McLeod all grabbed top 5 finishes. It was a very tough course - the ups and downs never stopped, but then, neither did our runners. Here are their results:
Congrats to Tania Diener, on completing a marathon in her 6th COUNTRY! - Tania ran the Leiden marathon in 5:15:12, finishing 31st in her age group.
Wow - super fast times at Fargo! Congrats to Richard Manzon and Brianna Hodges for their PR marathons. Here are the Regina
Our Regina runners did us proud in Ottawa. Lee-Ann and Enio Ricci both got top ten age group finishes in the Lumberjack and Voyageur challenges respectively. Lee-Ann ran a 2km, 5km and 10km on Saturday and then the marathon on Sunday. Enio ran a 5km and 10km on Saturday andthe half marathon on Sunday. Top runner, Michael Middlemiss of Regina, also posted an age group placing, with 1:16:11, good for 6th in the Men's division and 3rd in his 25 year old age group in the half-marathon.
Here are the Regina results:
Jon Paradowski finished his first 200 MILE RACE, coincidentally, also the first 200 mile race held in Canada. The race was in Sulphur Springs, in a conservation area near Hamilton Ontario, and the 200 milers had to complete 16 laps of 20 km each. The trail was described as rugged, and to add to the difficulty, on the first day it rained all day, and runners had to slog through mud. Jon finished in 65:44, and tied with Bert Blackbird of Manitoba for 4th place in the Men's race. We are super proud of you, Jon.
Congrats to David Fox and Richard Mawson, who earned age group places at the 50 km ultra in Calgary! In the half-marathon, Robert Humphries won his age group and John Svec came 2nd!
So many great things to say about Regina runners at the Saskatchewan marathon! As always, PRs should be mentioned first! Aubrey Swift and Doug Best both got huge PRs at this race! Kathleen Criddle was second woman in the marathon, and Conor Renouf was 3rd man in the marathon only two weeks after running a 100 miler. Iain Fyfe also nabbed second in the half, and there were many, many age group placers in the run. Congrats to the following:

The Sinister 7, a mountain trail race renowned for its difficulty, got more difficult this year. Organizers added to the length to make it 100 miles (161 km) compared to its 146 km length a few years ago; increased the amount of climbing to 6400 m of elevation gain and loss; and reduced the cutoff time to a very tight 30 hours. Then Mother Nature added her own challenges, with temperatures of over 30 degrees in the shade. The race had only a 18% finishing rate this year. Our Regina heroes, Jon Paradowski and Mathieu Ludlow managed over 12 hours on the trail, but had to concede to the mountain this year.
Regina had one team entered from the Jaleta Pacers. Shaun Hesse ran three legs (1, 2 and 7); Rick Minett, Tracy Fisher, Angela Stolz, and Gerry Nagy came 6th in the highly competitive Mixed Relay division in a time of 19:32:38. Congrats!
Tania Diener and Jan Steenkamp have done it again! Last year they amazed us with their feat of doing seven marathons in seven states in seven days: this year, they equalled that accomplishment, but with some additional challenges. The event started with a marathon in Wahpeton ND, and successively moved through Breckenridge MN, Baltic SD, Sioux City IA, Sioux City NE, Hiawatha KS, and St Joseph MO. Tania and Jan ran together, posting identical times every day that ranged from Day 1's 5:52:35 to Day 6's 7:35:57. The courses were generally out and backs - often the couple had to complete 10 or 20 out and backs to complete the distance. But the repetitiveness of the courses were not matched by the people they met, including world record holder Larry Macon! The biggest challenge, as might be expected of races in the US prairies in July, was the heat. Day 1 was a not-too-horrible temperature of high-20's, but Day 4 in Sioux City actually reached 43 C!
Tania also reached her 50th marathon on Day 4 on that hottest day! Congrats to Jan and Tania!!!
Congrats to Peter Hagar on his 3:29:28 marathon in Reykjavik Iceland - good for 30th in the Men's 50-59!
This race just keeps getting better and better! Thanks to the many volunteers who pour their hearts, heads and hands into making it successful.
First, let's recognize our first time marathoners:
Mike Cook - wow! 3:44:52 and 5th in M40 in his first marathon!
Connie Kozak - 5:37:16, 12th W50
Lisa Berezowsky - 5:45:08 - 10th W25
Jennifer Kurbis - 6:10:14 - 15th W50
It was a hot and smoky day, so it's pretty amazing that these people set PRs!
Lorraine Brezinkski - 3:38:07 - 5th W35 and 6th Women Overall - a 9 min PR and a BQ!
Douglas Sellinger - 4:47:03 - 19th M50
Chris Dornstauder - 1:28:11 - 1st in M35 for the half
Here are the club members who placed in their age groups or got a BQ - please email if we left someone out!
Congrats to the hardy souls who completed the famously tough Beaver Flat 50. In 50 km, runners gain and lose 2300 meters of vertical. The organizers describe the course as a "get-your-feet-wet, wreck-your-shins, and roll-your-ankle kind of run". Here are the results from the 50 k for MM members - please notify if we missed any! Congrats all!
Cody Wilkes, 7:06:26, 10th M
Jason Hubick, 7:27:35, 14th M
Dennis Dreher, 7:40:44, 16th M
Colleen Laskowski, 9:30:36, 11th W
Congrats to the Regina runners at the Bismarck marathon this week - Jan Steenkamp ran 4:47:36 for 7th in the Men's 50 age group and Tania Diener ran 6:00:45 for 6th in the Women's 50 age group - this is 6 days after their QCMarathon! Three Regina runners ran faaasst at this World Majors marathon, despite temperatures of over 20 degrees. Rob McLeod ran 3:08:34, to place 12th in his M55 age group - a truly impressive accomplishment! Stacey Cattell and Patti-Sue Sandison-Cattell ran together for 4:06:59, with Stacey placing 802nd in the M50 age group. Congrats all
For some people, an Ironman triathlon is not enough. Two of those crazy people are Alan Barry and Rick Minett, who both excelled in their first foray into Ultra-Ironman territory. Rick's event was a double Anvil, consisting of a 7.6 km swim, followed by a 360 km bike, and then an 84 km run. No sleep! Rick did an amazing 29:37:39 time, and despite being the oldest athlete in the event, was fourth overall!! Alan was even crazier - his event was the Triple Anvil, consisting of a 11.4 km swim, 540 km bike, and 126 km run. Alan had to stop at 84 km of run, at 58:27:27, making him an ultra double-Anvil finisher! Awesome job gents, we are so impressed.
Congrats to our three Regina athletes who ran the Okanagan marathon! January Hutchison ran her very first marathon, in a time of 4:35:01, placing 33rd in the W40-49 age group. Mike Cook, in only his second marathon, is already a pacer! Mike paced wife Shelley to a new PR of 3:55:23, giving Shelley 22nd in the W40 age group and Mike 35th in the M40 age group. Way to go, all.
Congrats to Regina and Marathon Matters runners who ran in the Victoria marathon last week. Both Kimberley Schneider and Philippe Lacroix earned top ten results in their age groups. Great job, crew! Philippe actually ran with famous Olympic race walker Evan Dunfee, and had Evan encouraging him to keep up!
Congrats to our three MM runners who finished the Niagara marathon October 15. Jan Steenkamp ran 5:21:35 for 38th in M50; Tania Diener ran 5:29:16 for 29th in W50 and Dhon Gumban, an ambassador for the race !! - ran 5:42:42 for 43rd in M35. Congrats!
The Deadfall is the best of trail running in Saskatchewan! Smoothly organized and supported by enthusiastic volunteers; low-key welcoming atmosphere; and runnable trails combining single track, lots of ups and downs. Congrats to Conor Renouf who set a new course record for the 50k, and huge thank you to Rick Minett the Race Director. Results of MM members for 25 and 50 k are:
Darwin and Terry Weimer are continuing their multiple completions of 50 states. They ran a marathon followed a week later by a weekend double, gaining three states in eight days, with amazingly consistent results. The first one was the Des Moine marathon on Oct 15, where Darwin ran 4:52:12 for 16th in the M50 division, and Terry ran the half in 2:59:25 for 34th W50. The next weekend at the Monster Mash, in Dover DE, Darwin ran 4:35:06 for 5th place in M60 and Terry ran the half in 2:55:48 for 10th spot in W60.

Jen Ruland and Gay Renouf ran this low-key event in Chicago that tours the lakefront on the bike path. Conditions were perfect! Jen ran the 50 km in 5:44:31 for 8th place in the Women's 30 division. Gay ran the 50 miles in 8:30:51 for a PR and 1st place in the Women's 50 division.
Jon Paradowski, our prolific ultra, ultra runner, has had another adventure. Jon was running the Javelina Jundred in Fountain Hills, handling the 90 degree temperatures with aplomb, when at about 100 km, he fell badly on some rocks and injured his arm. The race medical aid examined Jon's arm, and pulled him from the race, thinking it was broken. But Jon was not willing to give up - it was only a flesh wound! Jon got a volunteer to drive him (45 minutes) to a hospital in Scottsdale, got an x-ray, found out that the arm was not broken, only badly bruised, and convinced the doctor to write a note saying that x-rays showed that his arm was not broken. Back he raced to Fountain Hills, promising a large tip to the taxi driver if he got him back to the race course quickly. After some fast talk, Jon convinced the race officials to let him carry on. Despite his little break (ha ha), he still finished the race under the time limit.
Las Vegas was filled with Regina runners this weekend! 27 did the Rock and Roll marathon or half-marathon, and four did a crazy event - three long distance runs in three days!
Our Regina athletes really brought home the hardware from the three day event, Three of a Kind, in Las Vegas. Lee-Ann Ricci ran a marathon on day 1 (5:06:04), two halfs on day 2 (2:13:57 and 2:23:52 in the Rock and Roll half) and a marathon on day 3 (5:33:06) to win the top woman status in the two marathons and second woman in the half marathon.
Meanwhile, Jan Steenkamp ran three marathons in three days (5:25:17, 4:54:16 and 5:45:15) to earn 2nd in 50, 2nd M overall and 3rd M overall. Tania Diener ran two marathons in two days (5:03:18 and 6:20:39) to win 2nd W50 and 2nd W overall.
Wendy Tomyk, in her first attempt in this kind of event, ran three half marathons in three days in 2:19:04, 2:14:07, 2:21:30 for 2nd W50, 3rd W overall and 2nd W overall.
In the Rock and Roll marathon, Lorraine Brezinski was the fastest Regina woman in 3:46:09 for 13th place in W35. Cam Thick was the fastest man (qualifying for Marathon Maniacs here!) in 3:57:08.
In the half, Darren Engel was the fastest Regina man in 1:35:53 and Donna Kish was the fastest Regina woman in 2:07:14. Congrats also to these half-marathon finishers: David Belanger, Scott Rattray, Greg Harris, Curtis Kish, David Button, Kelly Gallagher, Enio Ricci, Lee-Ann Ricci, Katherine Roberts-Zimmer, Dean Zimmer, Cheryl Cochrane, Tom Cochrane, Tori-Anne Bottom Desjarlais, Rics Laurence Lao, Roselin Gladys Stonechild, Jennifer Kaytvr-Berzinski, Kristie Feliciano, Benjamin Hernando, Tyneesha Eaglechild, Shaunessey Beriault, Danelle Reiss, Sandra Rae Wankel, Samantha Koch Burton, and Rochelle Lao.
