Founder Milos Kostic was named the Sask Sport Athlete of the Year for 2011 in the Masters Athlete division. Milos was the dominant winner in the Men's 70-74 age group at both the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 world championships, setting a world age group record at Ironman by more than an hour. His running exploits nearly matched his triathlon accomplishments - he won his age group (on his birthday, no less!) at the Boston marathon in 3:17:38 and posted the second and third fastest marathon times in Canada for men over 70.
Also nominated for the Masters Athlete of the Year are Carol Lafayette-Boyd in Athletics and Jean Roney in Lawn Bowling.
Congrats to our Marathon Matters members who completed this very tough course. The Iron Legs has 20,000 feet of elevation gain and loss and is mostly on single track. Yikes!
Greg Dyck, 14th M, 11:55
Barry Hopkins, 28th M, 13:56
Laurie Simons, 14th W, 14:24
Two MM members finished the six day stage race, traveling from Buena Vista to Beaver Creek, Colorado. Simon Kostic from Regina and his partner Blair Anderson of Wynyard finished 16th yesterday in the Men's Masters division (combined age over 80) of the 6 day Gore Tex Trans Rockies Run in Colorado. Racers in teams of two run from Buena Vista to Beaver Creek Colorado, covering 200 km, climbing and descending over 8,000 m and reaching altitudes of over 4,000 m. Their aggregate time for the six stages was 30 hours, 15 minutes and 19 seconds.
Five club members completed the famously hilly Crater Lake Rim runs - after riding 100 miles the day before (except Gay, the wimp!)
Milos Kostic, 3:59:06, 12th M, 1st M70+
Gay Renouf. 3:59:19, 4th W, 1st W50-59

In the half-marathon, Nadia Williamson was the 12th W in 2:04:31
Three Regina-area teams competed in this year's version of the Trans Rockies 6 day stage race. The event travels 188 km from Buena Vista to Beaver Creek on single track and dirt roads, with a few technical sections. Each day, the distances range from 21 to 39 km and the climbing is significant - from 800 to 1600 m. The elevation is the most challenging of all - each night, the runners sleep above 3000 m and the highest point on the course, Hope Pass, is over 4000 m. The results of our teams were:
Michael and Loralie Hoffort, 30:09:52 for 15th place in the Mixed combined age 80+
- best placing 12th in Stage 2 (21 km, 1000 m)
Enio and LeeAnn Ricci (the Dead Gophers!) 32:18:16 for 21st place in Mixed 80+
- best placing 17th in Stage 3 (39 km, 900 m)
Shelley and Doug MacKenzie 34:28:42 for 26th place
- best placing 21st in Stage 5 (38 km, 1300 m)
Note that all the teams this year were married couples. In addition to the fine finishes, the really good news is that all are still married!

Regina runner Stacey Shand completed the prestigious North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in Chamonix, France today. The race was 120 km long and crossed numerous Alpine passes. Shand was 18th in the Women's aged 23-39 years division with a time of 31 hours, 28 minutes and 42 seconds. The UTMB is a closed race which accepts entries on a points basis of previous mountain ultras - Shand was admitted owing to finishing the Canadian Death Race 125 km, Sinister 7 146 km and Costa Rica Coastal Challenge 227 km.
MM members Stacey Shand and Gay Renouf survived the 8 day stage race traveling from Oberstdorf Germany, to Latsch, Italy. The four stages varied from 6 km to 53 km, passing through four countries, covering 274 km, and a total elevation gain of 15,400 m. Their team, the Mountain Gophers, was 22nd in the Women's division, out of 36 women's teams finishing in 55 hours, 17 minutes.
