The Marathon des Sables is nicknamed the "toughest footrace on earth", and our own MM member Stacey Shand is running it! Stacey herself has called it the hardest event she's ever done. The race attracts over 1000 international runners to run 243 km in the Sahara desert in a 6 day stage race format. Competitors find their own routes across the sand dunes; withstand temperatures up to 49 degrees, and must carry their own food and water, clothes, sleeping bag, and medical kit. Stacey's results are outstanding.
Stage 1, 25 km, 6:09:48, 526th position/871 finishers
Stage 2, 34 km, 7:07:38, aggregate position 516th
Stage 3, 38 km, 5:30:56, aggregate position 473rd
Stage 4, 82 km, 15:32:49, aggregate position 361st
Stage 5, 42 km, 6:27:08
Stage 6, 22 km, 2:41:39, aggregate position 365th,
Stacey finished this international race as the 37th WOMAN!

Wow, the Regina flatlanders did well at this particular mountain race! The 148 km race is normally done as a relay of 7 runners, but all three Regina soloists survived the brutal heat and tough course to become "sinners". The course gains 5,320 m of elevation and loses 5,350 m, and the 32 degree temperatures were the hottest in the race's history.
Rick Minett was the 19th male soloist in 24:34:48; Alan Barry was the 21st in 25:32:29 and Stacey Shand was the 7th woman in 26:09:24. Only 30% of the soloists finished.
Our Regina team did well too. The Fringe Monkeys were the 67th mixed team in 20:32:41. Jim Wonnek ran stages 1 and 2, Simon Kostic stage 3, Bill Brown stage 4, Blair Anderson stages 5 and 6, and Sacha Lingenfelter stage 7.
Regina athletes once again did us proud in the mountains of Alberta. Damon Tedford's placing of 9th Man in a time of 17:32:07 is the fastest Regina-area time in the 12 year history of the Death Race. Results are:
Damon Tedford, 17:32:07, 9th M, 4th M30-39
Derek Hoffart, 19:25:02, 27th M, 14th M30-39
Lorelie Hoffort, 23:24:22, 26th W, 8th W40-49
The official stats show Lee-Ann Ricci and Shelley Mackenzie as stopping after two stages (7:58 and 8:07 respectively) Lee-Ann reports that she missed the time cut-off to finish stage 3 by 3 minutes!!!
Stacey Shand placed 4th at the Ultraman Canadian Championships in Penticton. Ultraman is a triathlon event EVEN LONGER than Ironman which takes place over 3 days. Day 1 consists of a 10 km swim (4:19:15) and 144.8 km bike (5:34:45). Day 2 took place in temperatures over 39 degrees - Stacey finished the 273.5 km bike in 10:28:16. Day 3 was a double marathon, which Stacey completed in an impressive 9:29:39. Stacey related that she was inspired to push hard in the run, as she had just heard that athletes posting sub-30 hour times (time limit was 36 hours) got a special mention. She accomplished that, with a total time of 29:51:55. Congrats to Stacey, and her crew Marvin Koteck and Terry Allan!
Denise Harry and Gay Renouf posted a 4th place result in the Womens over 80 combined age division at the 6-day stage event traveling from Buena Vista to Beaver Creek. Distances varied from 21 km to 39 km and climbed between 800 m and1600 m each day. The elevation was the greatest challenge - every night was spent at almost 3000 m, and the highest point (Hope Pass) was at 4000 m. Trail surfaces were mostly good single track and dirt roads with some technical sections. Their individual stage results were:
Day 1: Buena Vista to Railway Bridge, 34 km, 800m, 4:17:52, 3rd W80+
Day 2: Vicksburg to Twin Lakes, 21 km, 1100 m, 3:44:56, 3rd W80+
Day 3: Leadville to Nova Guides, 39 km, 900 m, 5:24:55, 4th W80+
Day 4: Nova Guides to Red Cliff, 22 km, 1100 m, 3:39:05, 5th W80+
Day 5: Red Cliff to Vail, 39 km, 1400 m, 5:47:36, 4th W80+
Day 6: Vail to Beaver Creek, 39 km, 1600 m, 6:09:06, 4th W80+
Five of our local Flatlanders braved the mountains around Bragg Creek at the Ironlegs championship. The brutally hot day stopped many, including our Donn Lay, Adriana Moryski and Laurie Campbell. Huge congrats to finishers:

Stacey Shand has achieved a first for Saskatchewan runners. With her previous finishes of 148 km at Sinister 7 and 160 km at Lost Souls, and this finish of 100 km at IronHorse, Stacey becomes an "Alberta Triple Crown Ultra Finisher". This is Alberta's version of the Ultra Grand Slam, and requires runners to finish three ultras of at least 100 km each, totalling at least 385 km.
Stacey also excelled at IronHorse. She was the women's winner, and finished in 13:22.

Kathryn Rachar bettered her previous 24 hour run mark, at the Across the Years in Phoenix, AZ. Runners repeat a 1.05-mile, mostly gravel track, until they're exhausted, freezing (in Kathryn's case), or their brains resemble hamsters' brains. She covered 106 km, which put her in 19th spot for the women. Congrats, Kathryn!
