Stacey Shand just finished her third 100 mile race in 5 months! She ran the Texas trail race in 25:52:41 and was the 28th woman to finish. Amazing effort, Stacey.
Gay Renouf was a sub-24 hour finisher at the Umstead 100 miler in North Carolina. The course is set out as 8 laps with 8000 feet of elevation gain and loss. Organizers even provide personal pacers after dark to ensure it remains one of the best 100 milers for first timers and PR-seekers. Her time of 22:51:38 was good for 9th Woman and 2nd Woman in the 50-59 age group.

Power duo Jenn Ruland and Kelly Kozakavich completed this beautiful but gruesome trail marathon. But wait, here's the astounding part...this was Kelly's first marathon, and he did it on a "three week training program". Jen reports his longest run was 16 km leading up to the race. Taylor Mountain was 44 km of technical trail with 4000 ft of elevation gain and 8000 ft of loss. If that wasn't difficult enough, temperatures reached 30 degrees. Jen reports that they finished the race in 6:18, hand in hand with their friend Jocelyn Mamchur. Congrats all, special kudos to Kelly!
Regina athletes fared very well at the Chinook Half-Ironman in Calgary. Emanuela Bandol was 4th woman and 3rd in her age group of 30-34 in a time of 5:18:29. Other Regina area finishers were Steffa McLintock (6:23:39, 2nd W18-24) and Adriana Moryski (7:39:55, 10th W40-44).
Wow, so many Regina area runners excelled in this race. Here are the results of top Reginans and MM members:
Ingrid Currie, 3:32:59, 1st W50-54, 9th Woman overall
Cari Markewich, 3:39:36. 1st W35-39
Sandy Stepan, 3:44:07, 3rd W45-49
Jen Ruland, 3:58:41, 3rd W30-34
In the half-marathon division, Neil Sharp won the men's 60-64 division in 1:27:26! Congrats, all!
The Badwater 135 held each year in Death Valley is rightfully known as the toughest running race in the world. Each year, hundreds of hopeful competitors submit their race resumes outlining their hot weather running experience. Only 100 runners from around the world are admitted - 22 countries in 2013. And this year, not only was one of our own admitted, she finished in the top ten women! Stacey Shand finished the 217 km in 41:48:13 for 9th woman status.
Some of the quirks of the race are stories about the extreme heat. Death Valley was the site of the world's highest ever recorded temperature of 134 degrees F. This year's race was also exceptionally hot. One of Stacey's crew members, Terry Allan, reported the Day 1 temperature as being 120 degrees F (49 degrees C!!!) Runners are reported to run on the white lines of the road to reduce the soles of their shoes melting. Another crew member, Diane Yachina, reported that her toenail polish melted. Other crew members were Stacey's coach Luke Way from Calgary, and pacers Colleen Zato, Dave O'Connor and James Danoff-Burg from California/Vegas areas.
Thank you to Cari Markewich for organizing and hosting this brand new event. Cari also dragged out her family who volunteered from 5 in the morning to noon! Thanks Lauren, Andrew, Chris, Rick and Janet! Thanks also to Jen Ruland for making medals. We scared enough geese to make it worthwhile to hold this again next year. Many of the runners were happy to get the chance to qualify for the Marathon Maniacs too. Here are the results:

That was followed in very short order by the Across the Years 72 hours race in Phoenix AZ on Dec 28. Christian ran 243 km for 14th M, and Katherine ran 193 km for 8th F. So impressed!!
